In the UK and EU, there are 14 allergens that must be clearly labelled on food packaging. These allergens are:
Cereals containing gluten (e.g., wheat, barley, rye, oats)
Crustaceans (e.g., prawns, crab, lobster)
Eggs

Sulphur dioxide and sulphites (in concentrations of more than 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre)
These allergens must be highlighted on food labels to help consumers make informed choices and avoid potential allergic reactions.
Why is it important to label food correctly?
Correctly labelling food is crucial for both safety and compliance. It helps ensure that customers are informed about the ingredients, allergens, and nutritional content, which is vital for those with dietary restrictions or allergies. Proper labelling also helps businesses meet legal requirements and avoid penalties, as many countries have strict regulations on food packaging. In addition, clear labels can enhance brand transparency, build customer trust, and improve the overall shopping experience. Accurate labelling is an essential part of responsible food handling and consumer protection.
