Frequently Asked Questions

Does it matter which side of aluminium foil you use?

For most cooking and food storage purposes, it doesn't matter which side of aluminium foil you use, as both sides are the same in terms of functionality. However, one side is typically shinier (the side that faces the rollers during manufacturing), and the other side is more matte. The difference in appearance doesn’t affect its performance. In some specific applications, like wrapping food for even heat distribution or for certain scientific uses, the shiny side may be recommended, but for everyday use, both sides work equally well.

Why use baking paper instead of foil?

Baking paper offers several advantages over foil, especially when it comes to baking. It provides a more effective non-stick surface, making it ideal for baking cookies, cakes, and pastries without them sticking to the tray. It also helps with even heat distribution, ensuring your food bakes more uniformly. Unlike foil, which can sometimes react with acidic foods (like tomatoes), baking paper doesn’t affect the taste or appearance of your food. Additionally, baking paper is often compostable, making it a more eco-friendly choice than foil for certain applications.

Why is foil no longer made of tin?

Foil is no longer made of tin because aluminium is a more affordable, lightweight, and flexible material that performs better for most applications. While tin foil was used in the past, it was more expensive to produce, more prone to rust, and harder to work with. Aluminium foil is more durable, resistant to moisture, and widely available, making it the preferred choice for packaging, cooking, and other uses today.

Is cling film microwavable?

Yes, generally microwave-safe cling film can be used to cover food in the microwave, helping to retain moisture and heat. However, it is not advisable to microwave cling film for prolonged periods of time and at higher temperatures, as this may cause harmful chemicals to leach into your food. Always make sure the cling film is not in direct contact with the food to avoid melting.
